AYYYYYY!
I’m so glad you’re here, but where is here?
DGAF is a space for stuff and things: where I (Danyell, Danielle, Danizig, DanHell, Dan, Dani, or whateva ya know me as) can create without the algorithmic (read:capitalistic) oversight that has made communicating with y’all tricky over the years.
NeVeRthELesS sHe PeRsiSted.
But this isn’t a rant space! Being someone on the fringe, I get to test, try, observe, and experience things that are simply outside what is allowed on the restrictive and advertiser-driven platforms most of us use to keep up with each other, and I know that has value to many of you.
It’s time to share the good, the bad, the fugly, and the fragrant. Expect cannabis content alongside that new restaurant review, or cozied up with the sheet mask deal alert, not on its own (usually) green and gender-packaged pages, resigned to only reach my colleagues and not everyone else out there who might want this information.
STILL looking for prezzies? Check out this piece I did for Lifehacker:
LINKS I LOVED this week for holiday reads:
“At Panera, the mayhem is merely disguised by the presence of words like Napa and brioche, and the dissonance of it all abounds.”
I’m sorry but LMAO of COURSE this was written by a sex writer, they have such a command of comedy and tone in their work, that this piece about a viral EXTREME lemonade is still on my mind. Thanks for the giggles!
Check out this excellent long read if you are a fan of the caramel delights that are dates. I never paid much attention to them until the CEO of Shiffa Beauty sat and explained to me how incredible these fruits are, and we tried some rare varieties over tea. That was seven years ago and I’m still wholly addicted to both delicious dates and her best-of-all-time rose oil retinol ($$$$)!
Make sure to witness this heartbreaking account of deaths, lost wages, and other fuckery in cannabis operations, primarily on the West Coast, where exploitation is being uncovered not only in unsanctioned grows, but in LEGAL operations as well. Considering mega MSO TruWEED (name changed so they leave me the hell alone) just saved 20K on their own worker death case with OSHA (by agreeing to conduct a study, how cute) it’s beyond time to protect people who grow and harvest and process our cannabis.
Don’t be naive: no matter where in the industry they occur, sanctioned or not, these cutthroat practices are born of the exact same system that creates cannabis millionaires while people are still in jail. The same framework and regulations that keep prices and taxes higher, even for medical patients, that muscle out the (usually OG) competition to create cannamonopolies — all for a plant that most people can successfully grow alongside their tomatoes.
This week I listened as a captive audience to a heaping dose of ‘my wife’ comedy (don’t worry about how I ended up there, lol) and it’s got me thinking back to an article on Vox.
While people remember sitcoms fondly, I remember them as a twisted bit of culture that saw all the men in my family cackle on the couch while the women did just about everything else. The feeling of being a little kid who knew that this humor was attacking my mother, hurting her, wearing her down, no matter how ‘exaggerated’ or ‘hyperbolic’ it was as my dad laughed and laughed is often recalled in comparatively gross situations, except now it’s directed at me or other ‘marginalized’ folks.
Being a whole adult woman and seeing this ‘comedy’ still exist and thrive in this era would be hilariously cringe, if women in all 50 states (and around the world?) had abortion access, equal pay, and a proportionate presence everywhere they should. Take his wife! Please!
